Most of my posts about mingle skills deal with meeting strangers in social situations. Today, however, I am going to give some important advice about something that can happen once you are in a relationship. This brings me to my tip for today:
MINGLE TIP #26: MEN: DON'T HOVER OVER YOUR GIRLFRIEND LIKE A HELICOPTER
Helicoptering is a term usually associated with parents who "hover" (like a helicopter) over every detail of their children's lives. They want to know about (and often control) everything that is going on, every minute of every day. The same thing can happen in relationships. This, of course, will drive most people crazy.
It seems like the boom in popularity in cell phones has provided a great opportunity for helicopter daters. They want to know what you are doing, where you are going, who you are with, etc.--and they want to know fast.
HELICOPTER QUIZ (Find out if you or the person you are dating may be a helicopter):
1. Does the person text you and ask what you are doing right now on a regular basis?
2. Does the person regularly ask you what you did last night, yesterday, this morning, etc.?
3. Does the person get offended and/or complain when you don't answer a text immediately?
4. Does the person want to know every detail of seemingly unimportant events in your life?
If you are doing any of the things on this list on a regular basis, then you are a helicopter dater. Stop it! There is a good chance that you are going to ruin what could have otherwise been a great relationship.
This can actually even include the relationships that you may have with friends and acquaintances as well, not just dating ones. Helicoptering can take place in these situations as well.
So, if you are wondering why someone broke up with you, or why a friend suddenly tried to get a little distance from you, then you may want to ask yourself--"Am I a helicopter?" If the answer is yes, then it is time for a change. Learn to give people some space.
