This one is obviously easier said than done. Fearing rejection seems like the natural thing to do. If you want to be a successful mingler, however, you absolutely must get over your fear of being turned down. There is no way around this. You don't necessarily have to reach a point of getting totally rid of the fear, but you can definitely get to a point where it doesn't stop you from taking action.
Since you are hopefully now following my #1 Rule for Mingling (have a "hang-out" mindset), rejection should eventually become easier to handle. Getting rejected for a request just to see each other again is much easier to take than getting rejected for a date that you dramatically went for the first time you met someone. Don't try to go too far too fast. Getting rejected for a casual request to talk again should not be the end of the world.
Will you get embarrassed or shot down eventually if you ask enough people for their contact info? Probably. So what....
