Being open to making connections with people at all times is very important if you want to improve your social skills. Body language is a big part of this. This brings me to my tip for today:
MINGLE TIP #45: DON'T WALK WITH YOUR HEAD DOWN
(1) Walking with our head down has two negative consequences. One, it makes us look like we lack confidence. When we walk with our heads down we give the impression that we are not confident enough to look people in the eye. Not good. Also, when we are looking down we are missing opportunities to talk to strangers. A flash of eye contact can be a strong indicator of interest, or at the very least of general friendliness. If we aren't looking up then we are missing a chance to see what other people's eyes are doing.
(2) Try to make the back of your neck touch your collar (or shirt) when you walk. If there is any space between your neck and collar then you are probably looking/bending down too much when you walk. Once you have this problem taken care of, the next step is to make an effort to make brief eye contact with the people around you and see how they react. It shouldn't take much to encourage you to say something to a stranger. You'll never know until you try.
So, the next time you are walking around in public, pay attention to where you are looking. If you think you may be looking down too much, try to change your habits and be open to conversations with strangers. You'll be glad you did.
