Go through a checkout line in any grocery store and you will likely see at least one article giving advice about reading "signs" in relationships. It seems like these writers think they have the study of reading people down to a science. According to them, every action or inaction that a person does means something. Yikes. This brings me to my tip for today:
MINGLE TIP #51: DON'T THINK EVERYTHING IS A SIGNAL
I think Jerry Seinfeld sums up the benefit of trying to read a man's mind and the possible signals that he may be sending:
I bet women would like to know what men are really thinking: The Truth, the honest Truth of what men are really thinking... Cause I could tell ya! Would you like to know?! Alright I'll tell you: NOTHING!! We're not thinking anything... We're just walking around, looking around..
And signal reading is not just limited to women, either. Men do it as well.
(1) Don't make the mistake of thinking every little thing a person does has some deep meaning. Be careful about reading too much into everything that a person does that you may be interested in. Most people are just not thinking all that hard about what they are doing. They may give hints here and there, yes. It is crazy to think that there is some complicated meaning behind everything, though.
(2) There is nothing wrong with trying to read a vibe. Reading a vibe is fine. Just don't overdo it. Doing things like deciding that a person is in love with you because they liked two of your comments on Facebook is a little over the top.
So don't freak yourself out wondering about all the signals that your love interest is sending you. You are probably reading into things that aren't really there.
UPDATE: (3) Remember that some things actually are signals. Yes, it is true that everything is not a signal. Probably most of what we think are signals of interest or disinterest are meaningless. But don't make the mistake of thinking that nothing is a signal. Most people hate conflict or hurting feelings. This means that they have to communicate with signals. Pay attention and use your best judgement.
