This is the third tip that I have given about eye contact. That shows just how important I think eye contact is when it comes to having good social/mingle skills. This brings me to my tip for today.
MINGLE TIP #56: DON'T BE AN EYE CONTACT AVOIDING "ZOMBIE"
(1) What is an "Eye Contact Zombie?" If you go any place where there are people around you will probably see "eye contact zombies" everywhere. These are the people who look straight ahead (almost like they were in a zombie-like trance) when it looks like there is any chance that they may have to give eye contact to someone. When these people pass a stranger, their eyes almost look dead. It can actually be a little scary.
Another avoidance technique for many people is the abrupt head turn to look away from any person who is walking toward them. Lame Lame Lame. Don't let yourself be in the same category with these socially weak people.
The increasing popularity of cell phones has also given these social avoiders another way out. As soon as there is any chance of a social interaction with a stranger they are now going straight to the cell phone. Good grief.
(2) So, what should you do when it comes to eye contact with strangers? The civilized thing to do when it comes to eye contact is to look a person in the eye when they are walking past you (or vice versa). Don't try to pretend that something has your attention on the other side of the street, or that you have suddenly become a member of the undead. Interact a little with your fellow members of the human race. Be open to connecting with strangers. You never know when it might lead to a good interaction. Believe it or not, making eye contact won't kill you.
UPDATE: Don't overlook the importance of the little things. Is eye contact the biggest deal in the world? Maybe not. But when someone is making a quick first impression of you, this seemingly little thing can make or break your chances.
