Good body language is a very important part of social skills. If you are generally relaxed with a "just hanging out" attitude, you really shouldn't have to worry about it too much. Your body language will usually be natural automatically. There are some common body language mistakes that can negatively affect the way people think of you, however. That brings me to my tip for today:
MINGLE TIP #61: KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM YOUR FACE
This may not be something that you have thought of much during social situations. There are two main reasons why touching your face is a bad idea:
(1) Touching your face makes you look nervous and unconfident. Remember, the most important thing that you can project in social situations is comfort. Fidgeting of any kind makes you look nervous. Fidgeting and touching your face puts this right out in the open for everyone to see. You don't want to look like a psycho or crackhead on your first impression.
(2) Touching your face (especially if you cover your mouth) makes you look like you are hiding something. Many people are automatically suspicious of strangers. Don't give them more reason to think you are hiding something something by touching or covering your mouth. Women are often even more careful than men when it comes to caution about strangers. Don't end your chances for making a connection before you even get started.
There is no need to go overboard worrying about this tip, but we shouldn't ignore it either. The frequency that you touch your face is most likely not going to make or break your chances with someone. The little things can be important, though. Why not give yourself the best chance possible of looking your best?
