Social media fighting seems to be taking over as a national pastime. Get on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever outlet you visit most, and you will likely see people getting into it. Politics, religion, sports, and more are often fiercely debated. Personally, I like it -- IF it is done in a civilized way.
Whether you are talking to friends, relatives, acquaintances, or strangers on social media, the key to debating in a civilized way is to limit your attacks to the topic being discussed.
As soon as you start calling people names, saying they are stupid, or whatever other personal attack you may think of, it makes you look like a spoiled brat.
Having debates, discussions, and disagreements can be fun and informative - as long as you know how to handle it without getting ugly. If you don't think you are capable of disagreeing without getting personal, you may be better off avoiding the habit altogether.
You may think you are winning arguments or looking cool when you insult people with whom you disagree, but all you are really doing is making yourself look bad.
