Everybody seems to want to impress people these days. Tattoos. Beards. Twerking. Whatever the latest hot trend is. Some of those things are okay, I guess. There is one thing that is sweeping the nation though that is ruining social skills everywhere. That leads me to my tip for today:
MINGLE TIP #94: DON'T BE A SUGAR BLOWER
A sugar blower is someone who tries to be overly sweet and nice to the point of insincerity. Many people do this without even realizing it.
Here are some signs that you may be a sugar blower:
(1) You are not able to say "thank you" without adding "so much." This phrase stands out to me as high on the insincerity list. The meaning of it is to express an infinite amount of thanks. "Can I borrow a pencil?" Thank you so much. "Do you have the time?" Thank you so much. Good grief. If you say that phrase to me, at least please make sure that I have done something really good for you.
(2) You are much more positive when you text than when you talk in person. Here I go with phone etiquette again. We often text things like "Can't wait to see you tomorrow!" and "I'll see you at McDonalds!" Like James Brown once sang--please please please. If you talked like that in person, people would either think you were crazy or that you were in one of those shows where teenagers just start singing for no reason.
(3) Your personality changes from casual to kiss up when you talk to older people or people with authority. Don't be such a fake. Good grief. Thank you Eddie Haskell. (Yikes, that reference was old even for my parents).
(4) You go out of your way to flatter people. It's one thing to notice something about a person and give a compliment. That is not what I am getting at here. I'm talking about people who try to flatter and win over everyone they meet with numerous sweet and sugary compliments. Fake fake fake. Not to mention transparent.
So, there you have it. Like I have written many times before, being real is best. If you really want to be sincerely sweet for some reason, go for it. Just try not to overdo it, and definitely don't fake it.
